How it's worked out

The profit formula.

Profit per unit = price + shipping charged − item cost − your shipping cost − marketplace fees − ad spend − other costs

Marketplace fees = percentage fees × (price plus shipping charged, or price only, as you choose) + fixed fees per order. Each money figure is rounded to the cent.

Margin = profit per unit ÷ (price + shipping charged)

Break-even price = (item cost + shipping cost + fixed fees + ad spend + other costs − shipping charged × (1 − fee rate on shipping)) ÷ (1 − percentage fee rate)

The break-even price is the lowest selling price, to the cent, at which this unit does not lose money, with everything else held the same.

The example is the demo store's camp stove: a selling price of 45.00 and a landed cost of 24.00 leave 21.00, a 46.7% margin, before any fees, shipping or advertising. Enter your own fee rates to see what is left after them. If you only know the supplier price, work out the landed cost first with the landed cost calculator; using the supplier price makes every unit look more profitable than it is.
